Experimental Studies on the Hemolytic Action of Barbituric Acid Derivatives

Abstract
|
|
|
The author studied the hemolytic action of barbituric acid derivatives such as barbital, phenobarbital, pentobarbital and thiopental on rabbit erythrocytes and also measured the osmotic fragility of rabbit erythrocytes which were treated with barbituric acid derivatives in the saline medium of concentration ranging between 0. 3 and 0.9%,
The results were as follows,,
l. Barbiturates such as barbital, phenobarbital, pentobarbital and thiopental produced hemolysis in
vitro in the following order: phenobarbital>barbital>pentobarbital> thiopental.
2. Osmotic fragility was increased by the administration of barbituric acid derivatives such as
barbital, phenobarbital, pentobarbital and thiopental in vitro.
3. The intravenous injection of barbital, phenobarbital, pentobarbital and thiopental produced hemolysis in the same order as they did in vitro.
4. Blood plasma, dextrose and albumin protected erythrocytes against hemolysis induced by barbital, phenobarbital, pentobarbital and thiopental.
